Spring Break Tips
Spring Break is an ideal time to recharge your batteries by doing something you enjoy. Some choose to spend their time at home catching up with family and friends. Others may choose to escape to new locations to experience new adventures. Whether traveling abroad or closer to home, it’s a good idea to think about how things may be different from what you are accustomed to and to prepare for these differences.
Food and Eating
* If there are certain foods you just can’t live without, consider packing a supply.
* Be cautious about trying new foods if you have a sensitive stomach.
Sexuality
* Assumptions: Keep in mind that assumptions may be made about you as a New Yorker or an American student (i.e. American women are sexually adventurous).
* Communication:
o Rules of behavior may differ.
o You may need to learn how to ask for what you want in another language.
o Non-verbal behavior may be misconstrued.
o Issues of consent may be different.
* Sex:
o You still need to be concerned about STIs. There are different strains, infections, and differences in treatment.
o Contraception
+ Bring a supply of what you need
+ Have your doctor write a prescription before your trip.
+ Emergency contraception (Plan B) can be purchased over the counter at the SHC Pharmacy. See www.nyu.edu/health/ecp for more details.
+ Your menstrual cycle may be thrown off by travel and time change
+ In the event of unplanned pregnancy, access to services differs from state to state and abroad.
o Safer Sex Supplies
+ Cost, access, and quality may vary.
+ Free safer sex supplies are available at the Student Health Center, Office of LGBT Student Services, and the Student Resource Center.
o Sexual Assault
+ Resources outside of New York and the U.S. vary.
+ Definitions and laws may be different.
+ The approach to and handling of sexual assault may be less sensitive than in New York or the U.S.
LGBT Issues
* There may be cultural differences & expectations (i.e. men kissing men, women holding hands, etc.)
* Homophobia may be more overt outside of metropolitan areas.
* Same sex affection can be misconstrued.
Alcohol and Other Drug Issues
* The legal drinking age may be different and there may be various types/strengths of alcohol and other drugs.
* Sometimes people let their guard down in unfamiliar settings – this can be risky. Be especially vigilant about guarding your drink.
* Assumptions may be made about visiting students (i.e. American students like to drink/party, are more readily sexual, etc.).
